Professor Narendar Pani from the National Institute of Advanced Studies at the Indian Institute of Science will present his latest paper "Beyond horizontal and vertical inequalities, dynamics of intrapersonal inequality in India."

The distinction between horizontal and vertical inequalities does not always provide a comprehensive picture of the nature of inequality. While the distinction covers inequality between culturally determined groups and inequality between individuals, it typically does not pay adequate attention to inequality between economically determined groups. This talk will use the historical experience of two districts in south India to demonstrate that the efforts to remove inequalities between economically determined groups through land reforms created the basis for conflict between culturally determined groups. It will argue that the instrumentality of inequality is better understood by distinguishing instead between intergroup, interpersonal and intrapersonal inequalities, with intrapersonal inequality playing a critical role in influencing what inequality does.
