Barron's | A Fix for the Retirement System Draws Heat. The Architect Isn’t Backing Down.

Many lower-income workers don’t contribute to their company’s 401(k) plan, but labor economist Teresa Ghilarducci says they would save money if there was a government pension plan with a more generous salary match.

Ghilarducci’s plan to fix the retirement system was the topic of a Nov. 26 Barron’s article. The 64-year-old professor at New York City’s New School believes the U.S. spends too much on tax subsidies for 401(k) plans used heavily by upper-income Americans while tens of millions of Americans have no retirement savings whatsoever.
